This in-class 17-credit academic certificate in Industrial Hygiene/Hazardous Materials Management offers the following industry-recognized credentials through our Workforce and Professional Education (WPE) department. They are NIOSH 582, OSHA 30 Construction or General Industry, OSHA HAZWOPER 40, Lead Inspector, Risk Assessor, and Asbestos Inspector. Its requirements include four courses: Indoor Environmental Quality, Occupational Safety and Health, Industrial Hygiene, and Hazardous Materials Management.
This certificate will be an extension of our environmental studies degree program. It provides students with the knowledge, skills, and training required to conduct industrial hygiene and hazardous materials testing and assessment.
Students will conduct sampling and surveys in the field. They will typically work under the direction of a senior scientist. These skills are utilized to test toxins in the air and water to ensure that they are safe for the public. They are needed for official testing during natural disasters and sewer system disruptions. Additionally, they are needed for annual on-site inspections of school laboratories and drinking water. This certificate provides students with an academic and career pathway in the environment technician field and an ASS degree in technical studies.

This NIOSH 582 Equivalent course covers the OSHA training and licensing requirements for asbestos air monitors.
OSHA 30 Construction or General Industry
Covers safety topics related to building, renovating, and demolishing structures, including residential, commercial, and industrial projects. Topics include fall protection, forklift safety, fire safety, excavation, trenching, and personal protective equipment (PPE). The General Industry credential covers worker’s rights, workplace safety and health management, emergency action plans, electrical safety, walking and working surfaces, hazard communication, and materials handling.
HAZWOPER 40-hour is required for workers that perform activities that expose or potentially expose them to hazardous substances. This course is specifically designed for workers who are involved in clean-up operations, voluntary clean-up operations, emergency response operations, and storage, disposal, or treatment of hazardous substances or uncontrolled hazardous waste sites.
The course provides an overview of the OSHA lead standard for general industry (29 CFR 1910.1025), including key safety controls, permissible exposure limits and other important topics.
